Activation of Grimsey Island

From 4th until 6th September 2008, Dominic Smith, M0BLF, Martin Atherton, G3ZAY and Christian Schreiber, M0SCH operated a DXpedition as TF/homecall from Grimsey Island, Iceland (Operating site co-ordinates: 66.53957°N, -18.01633°W) (IOTA:EU-168).

Please note that our trip was not related to the activation of Grimsey by TF/DL3PS and TF/DJ2VO around the IOTA Contest.

Activation of Heimaey Island

On 9th September 2008, Dominic Smith, M0BLF, Martin Atherton, G3ZAY and Christian Schreiber, M0SCH operated a DXpedition as TF/homecall from Heimaey Island, the Westman Islands, Iceland (Operating site co-ordinates: 63.43942°N, -20.29087°W) (IOTA:EU-071).

General Information

All of my flights for this year have been carbon-offset with Climate Care.

QTHs

Grimsey is located about 25 miles north of the north-coast of Island, above Akureyri, the country's second city. It is also currently a few miles north of the Arctic Circle. More information about the island may be found on Grimsey's page on WikiPedia. The official IOTA website has full information (including maps) about EU-168. We operated from the hostel on the island, in the town by the harbour. The exact operating position was 66.53957N, 18.01633W (IP06xm)

Heimaey is the largest of the Westman Islands, located off the south-west coast. The official IOTA website has full information (including maps) about EU-071. We operated from a football field on the outskirts of the town on the island. The exact operating position was 63.43942N, 20.29087W (HP93uk).

Map and Itinery

2 August 2008 - Flight to Keflavik. Went to Geysir and Gullfoss. Stayed overnight at Geysir.
3 August 2008 - Visted Ðingvellir. Camped overnight at Dalvík.
4 August 2008 - Boat from Dalvík to Grimsey. Operated from Grimsey.
5 August 2008 - On Grimsey.
6 August 2008 - Evening boat back from Grimsey. Drove to a campsite near Mývatn.
7 August 2008 - Drove to Skaftafell.
8 August 2008 - Walking near Skaftafell, then drove to Þorlakshöfn to catch the evening boat to Grimsey.
9 August 2008 - Operated from Grimsey. On the afternoon boat to Þorlakshöfn. Drove to Reykavik for dinner, then camped near Keflavik airport.
10 August 2008 - Morning flight to London Stansted was delayed 8 hours, so got back to London in the evening.
