Dominic Smith - Places - Yelverton

Yelverton

This page is devoted to my home village - Yelverton in West Devon, England.

Yelverton is located about 10 miles (16 kilometres) north of the port city of Plymouth on the south coast of the county.

My first home was actually in the village of Horrabridge, about two miles down the road but we moved in 1994 to Yelverton, so that we could have more space as we grew up! What I like most about the village is its proximity to the major town of Plymouth whilst still being in Dartmoor National Park (although this does restrict the aerials I can put up!) and I hope that this can be appreciated from the photographs below.

The reason why the shops are all only one storey high is that, during World War II, Yelverton had its own airfield and, had the buildings had any more floors, they would have been in the way of aircraft taking off. As it was, the village church (St. Paul's) had its tower hit.

Regrettably, West Devon was particularly badly hit during the terrible Foot and Mouth disease outbreak of Spring 2001. Although life is now running as normal once more, the moor was closed for several months.
